"NAMI DuPage... Moments for Sharing"

Lady reaching for the sky

NAMI DuPage's "Moments for Sharing" is an e-mail bulletin in which we periodically share short stories or testimonials which we believe our readers will find informative, helpful, even inspiring

Without This Thing Called "NAMI", Where Would a Family Turn?

Our "Loved One" lives in Illinois and is suffering with deep depression as a result of a very hostile divorce including dispute over custody of her two small children, ages three and seven.

Alerted to NAMI and encouraged by her loving and concerned Sister, a Nurse Practitioner who lives and practices in California - and who sought out NAMI DuPage on-line from California! - the Loved One's immediate Family (Father, Step-mother, Maternal Mother and Sister during her visit to Illinois) together attended the opening class of NAMI DuPage's "Family to Family" in Naperville. This "Family to Family" class is now in its eighth week, and both the Family and the Sister regularly attend "Family to Family" classes, three of us in Naperville, one of us in California.

As the "Family to Family" programs progress, we Family members regularly share with each other and continue to learn and understand the nature and treatment of Mental Illness.

NAMI has certainly been a blessing for each of us, as well as for our Loved One.

What is Family-to-Family?

Family-to-Family is a free 12-week educational course designed specifically for parents, siblings, spouses, teen-age and adult children and significant others of persons dealing with mental illnesses . . . taught by trained family members with the lived experience. Over 115,000 family members have graduated from this national program.

The 2-1/2 hour class meets for 12 consecutive weeks, and each week's topic builds on the previous topics covered. Therefore, it is important that participants try to attend each class.

(If family members are in crisis and feel the need for support, we would encourage them to attend one of our Family Support Groups before taking the Family-to-Family educational course.)

NAMI DuPage is a grass-roots, DuPage County-focused organization funded entirely by donations from its generous local support network: individuals and households, businesses, foundations and social service agencies. Your generous support is greatly appreciated!
