Mental Health Research and the Future

The key to the future is continued research into the causes of and treatments for neurobiological brain diseases.

NAMI supports the full range of research, from basic behavioral and neuroscience through clinical and services research, to promote better understanding, treatment, quality of life, and ultimately a cure for serious brain disorders.  Efforts in these areas may also lead to prevention of mental illness in future generations.

Brain research graphicWe also advocate for increased funding focused on these goals as well as high quality research that respects and partners with consumers and family members.  In fact, 25% of all proceeds from our annual walkathon are donated every year directly to funding research.

It has also been a priority for NAMI to have severe mental illness research integrated into the mainstream of the biomedical research establishment.

Research is the ultimate source of hope for NAMI consumers and family members.  Already, research has yielded tremendous advances, underscoring the fact that severe mental illnesses are brain disorders, and providing amazing treatment advances.

Such results have fueled NAMI's advocacy to end stigma and discrimination against people with severe mental illnesses.  And, perhaps more importantly, the results have made recovery a real possibility for individuals who suffer from these chronic, disabling, and (not infrequently) life-threatening diseases.
